What Is Time Management?

By April D'Angelo On January 5, 2010 Under Leadership

We choose how we live our lives according to what we spend our time doing.  Author Robert J. McKain says, “The reason most goals are not achieved is that we spend our time doing second things first.”  It’s an absolute fact we have so many things vying for our time and attention.  Associates, friends and family members want to place you in their agendas.  Hundreds of thousands of companies and manufacturers want you to spend your time and money on their products.  But there is an even more serious reality going on.  Our very own ambitions and desires can be so diverse and uncertain that our attention becomes scattered and we don’t even know what to concentrate on.

Without focus we undermine our own capacity to succeed.  In order for us to reach our potential and fulfill our dreams we must first identify our priorities and then act upon them daily.

Poet Carl Sandburg stated “Time is the most valuable coin in your life.  You and you alone will determine how that coin will be spent.  Be careful that you do not let other people spend it for you.”

What will you do with your time to be the most effective in your daily life?  Will you procrastinate or give into other distractions or pressures?  Will you allow unnecessary tasks or pointless interruptions to eat up your day?  (checking emails, telemarketers, desktop organizing!, brainstorming discussions during valuable work hours)  Or will you take total responsibility for the way you spend your time, get in control of the things you can, and take ownership of your day?  If you do not decide on the way your day is spent someone else will!

Lets learn to be the leader of our own bodies and the management team for our own time!
