How To Work With Excellence

By April D'Angelo On March 18, 2010 7 Comments

When it comes to working with excellence Howard W. Newton said it best, “People forget how fast you did the job- but they remember how well you did it.”

In order to really be committed to anything you have to be dedicated to the job well done.  Nothing is quite as inspiring or motivating as caring about the details.  Being a master craftsman at whatever it is you do. Choosing to follow this road is what sets the good apart from the best.

Anyone who is really looking to achieve new levels of success must be committed to excellence.  Looking back at some examples of those truly dedicated you will find people like Michelangelo who were totally driven on by excellence to complete the task no matter how long it took or how difficult it was.  A person who is committed to excellence wants others to inspect all the details.  They work hard and are not trying to cover things up.  Taking pride in what you do will inspire you to fine tune all your skills so you can produce your very best. Working with excellence is doing your very best in every area in every way. I believe you will find that when you put your whole heart into something then you won’t let your head talk you out of it when it gets difficult.

This is the kind of commitment that will take you where the half hearted will never go.

Remember nearly 75 percent of success is simply showing up!  There are two common ways people tend to approach their daily commitments. They either focus on the internal or the external.  Those who focus on the external believe it is their conditions that determine whether or not they keep their commitments.  Of course with kind of mindset their level of commitment is constantly changing.

On the other hand those who make their moves based on the internal, focus more on their choices.  Every choice they make  becomes a turning point that will either compromise or confirm their commitments.  When moments like these arise throughout the day you will be able to recognize them because;

a) a personal decision will be required
b)
making this decision will cost you something
c)
there will be others likely influenced by it

You cannot control the people around you.  And you cannot control your circumstances. But you alone can control your choices. By focusing on this and making these choices with integrity you will keep a close monitor on your level of commitment throughout the day. And it is your level of commitment each day that determines your life a success.

How To Live With Excellence

By April D'Angelo On January 24, 2010 No Comments

how to live with excellenceThe Underestimated Secret of Choice

We have all been granted the same beautiful gift of choice. The freedom to choose is exercised in our lives every day. And inevitably with every choice we make there are consequences. Some good, some not so good. The fact remains before each of us there are three consistent choices to be made. The choice to be lazy. The choice to be mediocre and the choice to be excellent.

There are way too many easy examples of the fruit of laziness just look around the planet. Uncut lawns, garbage along the highways, houses a mess and lives destroyed. Lazy people tend to do only what they feel like doing which many times ends up being nothing at all. They often times are unhappy about the areas where they are lacking and jealous about others who are fulfilled. They are only willing to do something that promises to be easy. Not alert, unwilling to commit or plan ahead, and failing to take care of things. Sooner or later things just end up a mess and falling apart.

LAZY: resistant to work or exertion; sluggish or slow moving. -Webster’s II New College Dictionary

Of course we don’t all fall entirely into this category. But perhaps there are areas where our attitude is lazy. Maybe we are passive instead of active in the way we are dealing with things. Maybe we are caught in one of the most socially acceptable plagues of humanity. Stuck on the fence, middle of the road, mediocre mindset that believes “I’m just as good as anybody else”. These so called “average Joes” are not worse than anybody else but they are certainly not better either. These people usually remain halfway between success and failure. Only committing to do enough to just get them by and usually living very unfulfilled and frustrated lives. These same people are not really interested in how their behavior will affect others at least not enough to really improve themselves. They lack that extra-mile luster. They will leave their garbage on the park bench and set their wet drinks on other people’s wooden furniture. Maybe they just don’t want to make the right nutritional choices to take care of themselves properly.

MEDIOCRE: of moderate or low quality, value, ability, or performance -Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

Mediocrity may be acceptable, but it doesn’t help anybody. If we want to live our lives making an impact on those around us, then we must choose to move beyond mediocrity. We must choose to live our lives modeling the standard for excellence. This excellence should be evident in our conversation, our dress, the way we care for our home and car, the way we treat people and animals, ect. Let’s not confuse excellence with perfection here. This could prove to become both overwhelming and discouraging. The excellence I am referring to is that of our spirit and attitude. The one that is just willing to go above and beyond, to give 110% of yourself, doing things with all of your heart. One with this excellent attitude takes what he has and does the very best he can with it.

It is time to draw a line in the sand between you and our past. Make the choice to be a person of excellence; to live a life of excellence exceeding the status quo. Be the one who does more than what is expected this year!

“whatever you pursue in life is what you are going to receive. So …learn to sense what is vital, and approve and prize what is excellent and of real value [recognizing the highest and the best, and distinguishing the moral differences]… When you do, you will reap the rewards of excellence!” -Joyce Meyer

The Golden Rule of Leadership

By April D'Angelo On January 18, 2010 3 Comments

There are so many things in life we want to do or we want to see others do. We want to be or we just want to see others be. We want to control or you get my point. Not everything in life or leadership is in our control. You are not in control of how your business associates do business. You are not in control of your competitor’s marketing tactics. Or the stock market or whether or not it rains.

While life is uncertain and change is inevitable there is one thing you and you alone have complete control over. Your integrity. It is you alone that decides to set the standard by which you live and do business. Your morals and ethical values, the way you treat people and your overall character should not change according to where you are and what you’re doing. When it comes to using principles of honesty and integrity you are the designer of your own destiny.

The number one foundational element of leadership knows no boundaries and encounters no limitations. The Golden Rule is the same in life as it in leadership. People watch as others set the standards and they follow what they see. When we live our lives with integrity and follow the Golden Rule, we set an example that has a far greater impact than any words that we speak.

Simple as it sounds it’s powerful and true and can be applied to every area of life and leadership. When it comes to training people what do you think is the most influential and effective route? You got it, they follow their leader’s example. When they see them constantly learning and acquiring new skills they will be inspired to do the same.

What about motivating people do you think it’s just that simple? Of course If you want to motivate your people to go to a whole new level, get yourself motivated and and grow and develop yourself. People will follow the example they see. They will do what they see their leader doing.

How do you mentor people? By giving someone the inside look at your life; what you are experiencing and how you are handling it. The purpose is for them to learn from you mistakes and your successes. This should allow them the ability to make more educated decisions when they face similar circumstances. How?, by following your example and doing what they have already seen modeled for them.

It is so important to lead with your integrity and values. It doesn’t matter what your motto is or your company’s impressive-sounding statements of value or core beliefs. These all mean nothing unless they are being consistently modeled day in and day out by the top leaders all the way down. I am telling you people are looking for the standard and the example.

You have heard it said before you are only as strong as your weakest link. It doesn’t take much backsliding from a leader’s own integrity for people to set that as the standard of norm. Remember when your standard of integrity and values are right on the inside it will be easy to lead correctly on the outside. The Golden Rule of Leadership starts with you and continues through your own expanding sphere of influence. Great leaders lead by example with integrity. People follow what they see.

As you develop and convey these leadership qualities you’ll discover the secrets of what makes a good leader.

The Value of A Dream

By April D'Angelo On January 16, 2010 No Comments

Ahhh,.. Why dream you say?  Having a dream not only provides us with hope for the future it also gives us power for the present.  Not only does it allow us, but I would say it also encourages us to prioritize our entire lives around this dream.  It is the person with a dream who becomes profoundly aware of what he or she is willing to give up in order to make that dream a reality.  When one has a dream they can easily evaluate the importance or worth of all their activities based on whether they contribute to their dream or take away from it.  At this point they can place their time and attention on the things that bring them closer to their dream and less attention on those things that do not.

The sad fact is many people do quite the opposite when it comes to their dream.  Instead of focusing their attention on the one dream and letting go of the rest they tend to want to “keep all their options open”.  The problem with this sort of behavior is it actually opens the door for more problems.  Things become more chaotic as decision making becomes more and more complicated for them. In the beginning it may seem exciting having so many options at their fingertips and so many possibilities for them to choose from.  But as time goes by they will begin to recognize their inability to move forward.  All their time will be spent protecting and preserving their options instead of actually progressing in any of them.

So you see, it is valuable to have a dream.  The person who is willing to focus only on their one dream will not encounter these problems.  It will be easier to place their attention on what brings them closer to that dream.  Let everything else fall to the wayside. It is no longer important.  Just knowing that will free up our mind and our time to fully focus on our dream.  This is your “one thing focus”.  Now you can concentrate on only those things that make a difference.  This will keep you on the right path headed straight for your dream.

3 Easy Steps To Effective Time Management

By April D'Angelo On January 5, 2010 No Comments

Your values once defined will be a steady guide to keeping you on your path towards success.  But without the principle of priorities in place there will be no forward motion.

I’m going to give you three questions to answer and focus your days around to get you on the right track.

1) What are your specific requirements? In order to make a true assessment of your priorities in any area of your life you must first know what is required of you.  What is required of you to be a great husband or father?  What is required of you to perform well in your business?  If you are in a leadership role you should ask yourself what must you personally do that cannot be delegated to anyone else?  When getting your priorities in order it is important to start with the requirements question and give it some honest thought before moving on.

2) What yields the greatest return? It is important to note that some activities produce a much higher return for the efforts than do others.  Those who don’t pay attention to this factor probably won’t be making much progress. Once you know what yields the highest returns you should next be placing your focus on these areas.

3) What is the most rewarding for you? It is of course important to do those things that are effective in order to be the most productive.  But this alone may not leave you satisfied and content as a person.  It’s still important to consider what brings you satisfaction as well.  I would like to point out that there are those like to start at question #3 and go no further.  This I do not recommend.

In order to find success you must possess the discipline to execute the first two steps before adding the third.

What Is Time Management?

By April D'Angelo On January 5, 2010 No Comments

We choose how we live our lives according to what we spend our time doing.  Author Robert J. McKain says, “The reason most goals are not achieved is that we spend our time doing second things first.”  It’s an absolute fact we have so many things vying for our time and attention.  Associates, friends and family members want to place you in their agendas.  Hundreds of thousands of companies and manufacturers want you to spend your time and money on their products.  But there is an even more serious reality going on.  Our very own ambitions and desires can be so diverse and uncertain that our attention becomes scattered and we don’t even know what to concentrate on.

Without focus we undermine our own capacity to succeed.  In order for us to reach our potential and fulfill our dreams we must first identify our priorities and then act upon them daily.

Poet Carl Sandburg stated “Time is the most valuable coin in your life.  You and you alone will determine how that coin will be spent.  Be careful that you do not let other people spend it for you.”

What will you do with your time to be the most effective in your daily life?  Will you procrastinate or give into other distractions or pressures?  Will you allow unnecessary tasks or pointless interruptions to eat up your day?  (checking emails, telemarketers, desktop organizing!, brainstorming discussions during valuable work hours)  Or will you take total responsibility for the way you spend your time, get in control of the things you can, and take ownership of your day?  If you do not decide on the way your day is spent someone else will!

Lets learn to be the leader of our own bodies and the management team for our own time!
